Many visitors enjoy taking bus tours to explore Raro. You can also get around by taxi, tuk tuk, or public transportation. But to really experience the island, you should consider renting a car, a scooter or a bicycle.

But to really experience Rarotonga, you should consider renting a car, a scooter or a bicycle. Your valid foreign driver’s license to drive will be required.

Driving

In the Cook Islands, we try to bring the Kia Orana spirit everywhere, even when we’re driving. We take it slow, avoid unnecessary honking and give others space to get over. Please do your part when visiting by being cautious and courteous when pulling over to sight-see.

Helmet Laws

Motorcycle riders and Bicycle riders must wear a helmet.

Bicycle Hire

Rarotonga by bicycle is a scenic, relaxed option. The roads are generally in good condition and traffic is minimal. The major roads encircling the islands are sealed and relatively flat, but you’d need a sturdy mountain bike to tackle most of the trails to beaches and other coastal attractions.

Bus

Travelling by public bus in Rarotonga is an experience in itself. Drivers are often as funny as the vehicles, services operate clockwise and anti clockwise from 7am to 4:30pm Monday to Saturday - Please see exact timetable : busaboutraro.com Most buses prominently display the name "Clockwise" "Anti clockwise" in the front window. To stop a bus, wave your hand and arm. Fares are paid to the driver – try to have as near to the exact change as possible.

Car Rental

Renting a car is an amazing way to explore the island of Rarotonga! Car rental is available on the islands. Rental cars are mixed blend in terms of age and quality, with plenty of budget options available. Visitors are required to purchase a Temporary Driving License to legally drive in Rarotonga - available to purchase from the Police Station in Avarua.

Scooter

There is no better, more convenient and fun way to see the Cook Islands than cruising around the islands on a scooter. Imagine yourself driving high up in the mountains, through endless blue lagoon, Taro plantations, waterfalls and more. Or, how about a trip around the whole island, driving right by the ocean with the wind and the sun shining down on your face. It sounds idyllic and it truly is! Like the cars, visitors are required to purchase a Temporary Driving License to legally drive in Rarotonga.

Getting To & From Rarotonga International Airport

Shuttle services from the airport are provided to the major tourist centers, accommodations and costs about 25-40$NZD per person depending on hotel location. They can be booked before arrival or can be arranged upon arrival after customs clearance.

TAXI

The taxi are available on each international arrival. Please agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Standard public buses run both ways from the main road outside the Airport, a short walk from the terminal. The fare is 5$NZD/One way.
